I Wish I Were (fiction story)

by Marilyn Hamalainen
Twelve year old, Abbie lives in her head where no one can see how stupid she feels. When Mom walks into the bathroom, she’s shocked to find empty bottles and caps strewn on the bathroom floor. Standing in the middle is Abbie holding a prescription container.
Abbie’s compassionate counselor, Ivan, helps her open closed doors in her mind. When he asks her, “How do you see yourself fitting into your family?” she explodes: “I-I-I’m the nobody…. I- I w-wish I were s-s-s-someone else.”

Abbie hates stuttering. So when she meets Mildred who speaks muddled, she’s surprised by Mildred’s joy. While teaching Abbie how to paint, Mildred tells Abbie that Jesus buries wonderful things in us and He can help her find them. Abbie’s says, “He never helped m-m-me!”

After going through the process of forgiving and being forgiven, Ivan asks her how she feels about wishing she were someone else now. She laughs. “I hated being me,” she says. “So I wished I were someone else and someplace else. Finally, I’ve stopped hoping and looking for wonderful things about myself. Jesus has made us all good. He’s got special plans for everyone. His plan is nothing like I thought I wanted. But it’s fun and He helps me to like doing things I never thought I’d want to do.
